As I’ve grown up, there are things related to adulting that I definitely wish that I was better at. These things range from budgeting to cooking to prioritizing your friends and family and EVERYTHING in between- adulting is hard. So here are the 10 Habits to Master in your 20s:
-
Budget
This sounds so self-explanatory, but figuring out a budget that works for you is an art. It has to involve the perfect balance between being able to live your life and being responsible at the same time. It is also important to remember that your budget can evolve depending on your income or priorities, so don’t feel like you’re stuck with the same budget forever.
-
Find routines that work for you
While this isn’t exactly a habit, it is really important to experiment and see what types of things work best for you and your life. All of these habits have a certain level of experimentation involved so you can find the best version of it for you.
-
Self-Care
This is such a broad phrase, but it is so important to living a balanced life. Self- care can range from exercising to watching tv in your PJs to going to yoga and using essential oils. Any of these things could count as self-care, because self-care is personal, and everyone has a different version of it.
-
Don’t be afraid to fail
For me, this is the hardest habit to apply to my life. I’m a perfectionist and I love checking things off my to-do list, so the thought of failure isn’t something I enjoy at all. However, learning how to deal with things not going as planned is super important. The more comfortable you get with it, then the more resilient you’ll be.
-
Cook
I realize that cooking doesn’t sound fun or like it should be a priority, but it’s super important! Cooking can be a fun way to hang out with friends, save money, and to make things that are healthier for your body than frozen food or takeout. I am still in the process of learning to cook more things, but I have a few healthy and easy staples I can make.
-
Explore
Exploring is probably my favorite thing to do, and I’ve learned the most from it. Exploring could include walking around your neighborhood and finding new things to do or try or traveling to new places. All of these things expand who you are, what you know, and can educate you about different cultures. Exploring is a great way to learn more about others and yourself.
-
Have a social life
Again, this sounds really self-explanatory, but it means so much more than hanging out with friends. It means prioritize your friends and family by setting aside time weekly to catch up or sending a gift saying you’re thinking of them when they are going through a hard time. Good friends and family members are the people who are going to stick by you during anything that’s going on in your life, so making it a priority to see them is important.
-
Keep learning
I love to learn- I think that if education was free I would have way too many degrees. But there are other ways to learn besides a classic higher education degree, you could take classes online or at a community center, read different types of books, take different types of jobs that force you to learn new skills, etc. The opportunities to learn more are endless, so take advantage of them!
-
Don’t compare yourself to others
Again, this might not be a habit, but don’t play the comparison game. It will just make you feel super crummy about how your life is going and how it isn’t what you thought it would be, which isn’t productive at all towards achieving your goals and aspirations. Focus on your life and taking the strides towards achieving what you want to accomplish.
-
Invest in your future
This is super broad but really important to get in the habit of. Investing in your future could look like learning new skills to get the job you want or by starting a retirement account and depositing money into that every month. But really take the time to sit down and think about what you want your future to look like, and then decide on the actionable steps you need to take to achieve that.

I love these habits. I’m 23 and I’m slowly learning all these but definitely need to work on my cooking skills. I pratically live on veggie burgers, cauliflower, and shrimp because I don’t know how to cook much!
